A Guide to Cardinia, Bunyip, Editorial, Places to Go|

What’s in a Bunyip?

First settled by Europeans in the first half of the 1800s, the township now known as Bunyip is on the north eastern edge of the Koo Wee Rup swamp. Given the difficulties of the environment, it wasn’t until 1877 that the Post Office was established – several years after the “Butcher’s Arms” and “Bunyip” hotels.

Today, only one of the two pubs remain, with the other in a state of limbo, and business for the Bottom Pub is booming. While population growth has been steady since settlement, I suspect over the next few years the entire town will follow suit and boom.

My family has had a little to do with Bunyip – my elder children attended Bunyip P.S for the majority of their primary schooling, and it treated them very well
Last Saturday I took the opportunity to head over to Bunyip and have a chat with some of the local businesses – given my timing, I wasn’t expecting too much, but to my delight, I was there for hours talking to several of the local businesses.

Biddy Martha’s Cafe

Biddy Martha'sBiddy Martha’s Cafe opened about 6 years ago – in fact, this Tuesday the 14th is not only their 6th birthday, but also the re-opening in their new location! And having been allowed to see inside while Gavin was preparing for the day, I’m rather excited for it. Biddy Martha’s has always had it’s own unique charm, which seems to mesh rather well with the atmosphere of the town itself, and the coffee and food is absolutely first rate.

Local Element Gifts

Local Element GiftsLocal Elements Gifts is one of the newer business faces in town, and has a more contemporary look and feel, but the same friendly feel. The gifts are reasonably priced, excellent quality, and there’s a good variety, including the eco-friendly. In very exciting news beginning late February, Miranda (in conjunction with a few others) will be running some very special workshops. They are going to be brilliant.

The Quilter’s Closet

The Quilter's ClosetThe Quilter’s Closet is an absolute delight – and from someone who has barely sewed a single stitch, that’s saying something. The genuine smile on Tracey’s face while we chatted was reflected in every facet of the shop, from the customers quietly enjoying their lessons to the gorgeous fabrics on display. Another of the “younger” businesses in town, the Quilter’s Closet is a must for anyone who enjoys their crafts.

Two Hoots Wine Bar

Two Hoots Wine BarTwo Hoots Wine Bar occupies the building that originally housed Biddy Martha’s, and that building sets the tone for what’s inside. Quiet, comfortable and relaxed had I been there later in the evening, I would have quite enjoyed sitting back and enjoying a meal, or slow drink (or three). Two Hoots hours compliment Biddy martha’s quite nicely – I can envisage another trip back to relax and soak up the surroundings by spending a lazy time drifting from one to the next.

Bottom Pub Bunyip

My conversation with Rod at the bottom pub was much more brief; but very informative, and I’ll be back to talk with him in more depth in a week or two. But, we’ve had a bit of history already… you may remember the Chilli Tour I began last year…

I’m looking forward to going back, and not just chatting with local businesses, but other residents, and exploring the area around Bunyip. You should make a day of it, too; there’s so many hidden treasures
