I’ve always been a bit of a geek, or nerd. From repeatedly devouring Lord of the Rings – the books – as a kid, through Dungeons and Dragons as a teen and then Magic: the Gathering, a collectable card game, as an adult. So, when news of PAK EX broke, I got just a little excited. (Okay, a lot excited. But come on!)
And the best thing about PAK EX – it’s not just for geeks or nerds. It’s for absolutely everybody.
These days it’s hard to convince the kids to get away from a screen. They run out of screen time on their devices? Before you know it they’ve pulled out another gadget and continue with their face glued to another screen.
We are Region of Pakenham Gamers (R.P.G.) Inc., a non-profit community group who are running PAK EX, a free community event on the 14th of March at the Outlook Centre in Pakenham. Our aim is to open up gaming more to families and showcase the great social benefits of tabletop and board games. Fewer screens, more connections.
Playing board games can improve social, mental and physical health for the individual and the whole community. Two of the biggest health benefits include increased cognitive activity through actively engaging your brain, and reducing stress. Games, both educational and non-educational, teach important social skills such as communicating with others, negotiating, sharing, and taking turns. It fosters the ability to focus, lengthens attention span and makes an individual more patient and accepting. This is in addition to the benefits of increased family time together!
At PAK EX you can try your hand at a number of different tabletop games, role-playing games and board games free of charge. Not only is it a free day out, it’s an opportunity to try some new things out and get the kids away from the screen.Come and see what PAK EX is all about on Saturday 14th March 2020 at Outlook Community Centre, Toomuc Valley Rd, Pakenham. Door open at 10:00 am. Board games, stall holders and competitions on the day. For more information, head on over to our Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/pakenhamexpo/
